Sunbirds lose a wild one 8-7 in renewed rivalry with Lancers

Box Score

Fresno Pacific and California Baptist renewed their longtime conference rivalry right where it left off in 2011, playing a wild back-and-forth contest before CBU (12-7, 5-0 PacWest) pulled out a walkoff 8-7 win in the bottom of the 10th over the Sunbirds (11-7, 6-3 PacWest).

In a game that featured six straight innings with at least one team scoring a run, 31 total hits and three homeruns; the ending featured a wild pitch that doomed FPU to score the Lancers Garrett Trevino and hand FPU the loss.

Brett Bishop collected two hits and three RBI, including a three-run homer to put FPU ahead in the seventh, Kyle Coppom had two hits, one being a go-ahead solo blast in the ninth, and Baron Bower collected three hits and two RBI in the loss for FPU.

Matt Daugherty (2-1) received the win for CBU out of the bullpen and also hit a two-run homerun in the seventh to tie the game at 5 while Josh Medeles (1-1) picked up the loss in relief for the Sunbirds.

The Sunbirds dug themselves into an early hole by not capitalizing on scoring opportunities and committed four errors on the day, leading to four runs for the Lancers.

The first two innings FPU stranded two runners in scoring position. Devin Lee reached second base in the first with one out, but was left before Kaohu Gaspar led off the second with a double and was eventually stranded at third.

CBU took advantage of the Sunbirds' missed opportunities by jumping on the board first in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs on a single to shortstop to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

The Lancers tacked on another run in the third, extending the lead to 3-0 following a sac fly by Ryan Cathers to score Blair Moore.

California Baptist's Jon Bengard had a 14.1 straight scoreless inning streak ended in the fifth with an RBI single by Baron Bower to bring home Bobby Mendoza, who lead off the inning with a bunt single and was moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Steven Moon to put the Sunbirds on the board down 3-1.

FPU continued to cut the Lancer lead in the sixth as Kyle Coppom tripled with one out and scored on a sac fly from John Koretoff before Bishop's blast put the Sunbirds ahead 5-3 in the top of the seventh.

Cal Baptist would respond the next half inning however with Daugherty's homer to tie the score at five.

As each team exchanged runs in the eighth, FPU seemed to gain momentum with the go-ahead blast from Coppom in the ninth and was three outs away from escaping with the series-opening win. The Lancers, however, were able to capitalize on a leadoff double and score on a sac fly from Andy Crowley to score Moore off Medeles, who was brought in with one out and a runner on third.

After a scoreless half in extra innings for the Sunbirds, a single, a wild pitch and a bunt single set up a wild pitch from Kenny Overly to give CBU the walkoff win 8-7.

Fresno Pacific and California Baptist continue their four-game series tomorrow in Riverside at 3:00 pm.
