Sunbirds rally for comeback win over Point Loma on Senior Day

Box Score

For the second straight match the Sunbirds came from behind to keep their conference title hopes alive with a 3-2 win over Point Loma on senior day. Senior Bruno Pessoa dished out the game-winning assist, in his first match of the season, to Alvaro Nogales in the 80th minute.

Elijah Gallegos and Jorge Chedraui also scored for the Sunbirds (11-4-1, 8-2) who beat PLNU (7-7-3, 5-4-3) for the second straight season on Senior Day. With his goal Chedraui became the first Sunbird this season to hit double-digits this season.

The Sunbirds fought back from a 2-1 deficit just after the start of the second half to record their third straight win and finish an undefeated home schedule.

Both teams struggled in the early stages of the match to find their offensive rhythm, but the Sunbirds finally broke through in the 21 st minute when Nogales left a centering pass for Chedraui that he ripped past keeper Carter Phillips for the 1-0 lead.

Twelve minutes later freshman Daniel ten Bosch struck back when he nailed a penalty to even the match at 1-1. It was the second penalty allowed in as many games by the Sunbirds who had allowed just one PK attempt all season coming into the week. PLNU struck again just after half in the 53rd minute.

Following the goal FPU found their offensive groove creating multiple chances before finally breaking through in the 54 th minute on a cross from Eric Velarde that found Gallegos for the header past Phillips.

The defense stepped up in the final 10 keeping the Sea Lions at bay despite missing their two starting center backs. Keeper Fabian Rangel put together an impressive performance in the net allowing just one goal in the run of play and racking up 11 saves, his first double-digit saver performance of the season.

Fresno Pacific take its show on the road to close out the regular season with a pair of matches in Northern California starting with Holy Names this Wednesday at 3 p.m.
