Chico, Calif. - Fresno Pacific continued its grueling early-season schedule on Tuesday as the Sunbirds fell 79-47 to the NCAA Division II #17-ranked Chico State Wildcats.
"They have a very good basketball team," said head coach
Lindsey Wilson. "They are good offensively and defensively and we have to play our best to beat a team like that. We didn't get it done tonight."
Keairra White was the only Sunbird in double figures, finishing with 12 points, while
Charde Stevens added eight points and six rebounds and
Bree Alvarez finished with seven points. The Sunbirds (0-3) had 29 turnovers in the loss, leading to a 33-14 Wildcat advantage in points off turnovers.
FPU got off to a slow start, being held without a field goal for the first three minutes and 40 seconds. Chico State used a 24-7 run over the last ten minutes of the first half to open up a 38-19 halftime lead. The Sunbirds would never get any closer than that, trailing by as many as 40 points with five minutes to play.
The Sunbirds hit the road again this weekend when they travel to Idaho for two games against another tough opponent, Northwest Nazarene. The Crusaders soundly defeated the Sunbirds twice last season and are receiving votes in the NCAA Division II national poll.
"We have to be ready for this coming weekend against a tough Northwest Nazarene team," said Wilson. "We have to come out with more energy and have a better effort on both sides of the floor."
