Sarah King moved into the FPU record books, becoming the program's all-time leader in career shutouts as Fresno Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur played to a scoreless tie on Saturday night.
King, who made six saves in goal for her fourth shutout of the season, now has 11 career shutouts, passing former Sunbird goalie Justine Caldera (2005-08) for the top spot all-time.
"I'm pretty humbled by this honor, but I can't help but thank the defense in front of me," said King. "The past two years I've had such hard workers that in the end the stats say that I had the shutout but it's them just as much."
"Sarah has been phenomenal," said head coach Erik Farfan. "She has come in and stepped up our ability as a team to keep shutouts. We're really proud of her and we knew bringing her in here would be the right thing to do."
The Sunbirds (4-3-1, 2-1-1 PacWest) had numerous chances throughout the match, out-shooting NDNU 24-13, but were unable to capitalize on a goal. Nayeli Deniz had perhaps the best chance of the game in the first half, nearly putting the Sunbirds on the board with a great shot from just outside the 18-yard box, but it went off the bottom of the crossbar and out of danger. Deniz, Ashley Tallon, Hannah Coyle and Tori Sena each had four shots for FPU.
"I do feel like we were a bit unlucky to not get on the scoreboard with the amount of chances we did have. Soccer is one of those games where some nights the ball just isn't going to go in the net for you," said Farfan.
Amy Rich made nine saves to record the shutout for the Argos (4-5-1, 2-1-1 PacWest), who had their chances as well with PacWest leading goal-scorer Adriana Cortes leading the charge. Cortes, who has seven goals on the season, took five shots on the night but King was in top-form. The Sunbird backline of Caressa Archie, Alyssa Nakaguchi and Clara Buettner was also in top-form as the team posted its fourth consecutive shutout.
The Sunbirds now head to Hawaii for a four-game road trip beginning next Saturday at Hawaii Hilo. Last season the Sunbirds went undefeated in Hawaii, going 3-0-1.
The FPU women's soccer program began in 2001. King is the third player to have set the career shutouts record. Audrey Hadden initially set the record in 2004, finishing her career with seven before Caldera broke that record in 2008.
