Fresno Pacific found itself in an early hole and was unable to recover as the Sunbirds fell 1-0 to PacWest leader Azusa Pacific.
The Sunbirds (6-7-1, 4-4-1 PacWest) gave up an early goal as APU's Mayra Almazan found the net on a deep shot 15 minutes into the match. FPU would play a great defensive game the rest of the way against one of the league's top offenses, but the Cougars' top-ranked defense stifled the FPU attack.
The Cougars (11-1-1, 9-0-1 PacWest) have only allowed four goals all season and lead the conference, allowing just 0.33 goals per game. APU held a 24-3 shot advantage and an 11-1 shot on goal advantage in the victory.
Sarah King made nine saves in goal for the Sunbirds.
"Today we needed to be at our best throughout the entirety of the match in order to get a good result against an outstanding opponent," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "We simply did not do that for the full 90 minutes which ultimately resulted in this disappointing loss."
The Sunbirds will look to regroup this Saturday as they take on Point Loma at 11 am. It will be senior day as nine FPU seniors play their final home game:
Sarah King,
Kelly Nikkel,
Brianna Reyes,
Sarah Reed,
Haley Tallon,
Ashley Tallon,
Nayeli Deniz,
Jessica Castillo,
Sara Vega and
Clara Buettner.
