Sunbirds blanked in final Hawaii match

Box Score The Sunbirds fell 3-0 to BYU Hawaii to drop to 2-2 on their Hawaii road trip. FPU was only able to get nine shots off in the defensive battle that dropped the Sunbirds to 8-4-1 overall and 6-2 in conference.

"We are very disappointed," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "They are a quality team and they have some good players. We just couldn't make the adjustments in the first half. It turned into an ugly game and we just didn't get the job done."

The unfavorable field conditions were a contributing factor in disrupting the Sunbirds typical possession style of play as the team struggled to find an offensive rhythm with the uneven playing surface. Ivan Mirkovic and Elijah Gallegos each got off a pair of shots, but nothing found the back of the net.

"The field was an adjustment for us," said Ramirez. "The field had so many bumps and dips and when you are unaccustomed to reading those it is difficult for a team like ours that likes to play the ball on the ground and build through possession.

The Seasiders (5-3-2, 2-3-1 PacWest) struck in the 24th minute with a goal from Romy Lapkip as a ball that the Sunbirds were unable to clear found the back of the net. Just ten minutes later, BYUH struck again with a Cam Neely goal to put FPU in a 2-0 hole. Four minutes later a free kick gave BYUH their third and final goal of the match.

"The third goal did us in. It was a nice play by them, they were able to redirect the free kick and get it past Fabian," said Ramirez.

In the second half the Sunbirds made the adjustments and altered their style of play to accommodate the conditions. While FPU was able to create chances, their efforts went unrewarded as nothing found the goal.

The Sunbirds return home from the long road trip for a Wednesday showdown with Cal State San Marcos. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Ramirez field.
