Sunbirds shutout streak ends in loss to Hilo

Box Score

Hilo, Hawaii -- Hawaii Hilo ended the Sunbirds 394 minute opponent scoreless streak with a goal in the 10th minute that proved to be the game winner in a 1-0 win for the Vulcans. The loss was the first for Fresno Pacific in nearly a month.

"We came out flat and they took advantage in the first ten minutes," said head coach Erik Farfan. "Credit to Hawaii Hilo they hit a great shot. It was a well taken opportunity."

A long travel day and less than favorable field conditions took their toll in the Sunbirds (4-4-1, 2-2-1 PacWest) shutout loss to Hawaii Hilo (6-3-1, 3-3 PacWest). Alexandra Marin ripped a shot from 45-yards away that ricochet off the upper corner and in for her first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Sarah King did stop three other shots that came her way in the match.

It would be all the Vulcans needed as they held the Sunbirds to just three total shots one of which landed on goal. Once again the Sunbirds struggled in the final third unable to finish off chances in the second half.

"They played with a lot of intensity and high pressure," said Farfan. "We were able to create a lot of chances, especially in the second half, but our ability to score has continued to be one of the areas we have to improve."

The best of those chances came in the 74th minute when Kelly Nikkel put a shot on frame, but Hilo goalkeeper made Jenna Hufford made the only save required of her on the day.

Fresno Pacific will have to bounce back quickly with a quick turnaround to a Monday match against Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
