Sunbirds freeze Penguins for fourth straight win

Box Score The Sunbirds notched their fourth straight win with a 75-66 win over Dominican University (CA). Fresno Pacific (4-14, 4-7 PacWest) has not lost since snapping its 14 game losing streak to open the season.

Junior Breana Buczek led the Sunbirds in scoring with a career-high 20 points that came on 7-11 shooting and 6-7 from the free throw line, she also led the team in rebounds with eight. Keairra White added 13 and senior Kayla Clement chipped in 11 for Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds were behind most of the game before an 11-2 run in the span of two minutes put Fresno Pacific in front for good.

The Penguins (5-13, 4-6 PacWest) Kimi Nakamura led the way with 21 points, pacing all scorers, the next highest scorer for DU Solonika Quewan-Owens with nine points and led the team with seven rebounds.

Fresno Pacific was outshot .429 to .385 and outrebounded 42-40, but the Sunbirds knocked down 18 free throws to just five for Dominican. The Penguins were also hampered by 10 second half turnovers, including three in the Sunbirds big push.
The Sunbirds led 6-2 early in the game before 13-2 run by Dominican put them in the drivers seat. FPU reclaimed the lead at 19-18 before both teams witnessed a seesaw affair in the final minutes of the half with DU claiming the final blow to go into the break up by three.

Dominican continued their momentum early in the second scoring the first four points of the half, all scored by Nakamura. The Penguins managed to hang on to their lead through most of the second half, the Sunbirds closed it to one on four separate occasions before taking the lead with 9:56 remaining on a pair of White free throws.

A late run by DU closed the lead to three but the Sunbirds went on a 7-0 run to put the game away with just over a minute remaining.

Fresno Pacific will head back to northern California this weekend where they will face Holy Names in search of their fifth straight victory.
