Fresno Pacific withstood two BYU-Hawaii rallies late in the second half to hang on for its second win of the season and second consecutive win.
“I am so proud of my girls tonight,” said head coach Erin Scholz. “We have been harping on communication and to see them carryover with that tonight is huge and very rewarding.”
FPU (2-14, 2-7 PacWest) got 16 points from senior Callie Kloubec and 14 points from sophomore Keairra White in the nearly wire-to-wire win.
BYU-Hawaii (4-10, 3-5 PacWest) had three players in double-figures, but the Sunbirds held their two top scorers below their season average. Brianna Jessop and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo each scored 19 in the loss and Danna Lynn-Hooper chipped in 10 points.
Fresno Pacific was able to capitalize on 23 Seasiders' turnovers, 12 of which came in the second half, which they converted into 30 points compared to just 13 points off turnovers for BYUH.
Two early fast-break buckets gave BYU-Hawaii a three-point lead just a minute into the game. Fresno Pacific answered with a 9-0 spurt of its own to take a six point lead. Five of the nine points in the run came from senior Kerri Stephanoff who got it started with a deep three-pointer that tied the game at six.
BYUH regained the lead at 20-19 for less than a minute when Kloubec was left wide open in the paint for the easy bucket and the lead. After the basket that put FPU up one the Sunbirds never looked back and closed the half 9-4 in the final five minutes.
The two teams traded buckets early in the second half as Tatupu-Leopoldo scored an easy layup that was followed by a Kayla Clement three within the first 30-seconds of the half. Fresno Pacific pushed the lead all the way out to 10 with 15:04 remaining in the half.
The lead went up and down like a rollercoaster for the remainder of the half, at one point going all the way down to one, but the Sunbirds were able to answer each of the Seasiders' runs including the final run with two minutes remaining when BYU-Hawaii got the lead down to just three.
“It was a new challenge for us,” said Scholz. “We persevered even when things weren't going our way. I am very proud for maintaining our composure and maintaining control of the basketball game.”
Fresno Pacific fired back with a Stephanoff three that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the Seasiders who missed their final five attempts from the field.
The Sunbirds held BYUH to 31.8-percent from the field, the lowest field goal percentage they have allowed all season. They also had a season high in steals (13) and assists (19).
Fresno Pacific will end its five-game home stand this Saturday when they face the PacWest's second ranked team in Hawaii Pacific. The game will also be a part of the Alumni Orange Out and admission will be discounted. Tipoff is set for 2:30 in the Special Events Center.
