Sea Lions sink Sunbirds 64-58

Box Score

Fresno Pacific was unable to get their first win of the season in a 64-58 loss to the Point Loma Sea Lions. The game was the first for FPU since a 90-41 loss to San Diego State on December 19.

“If it's not one half it's the other,” said head coach Erin Scholz. “Our problem all season long has been the second half and I felt like tonight it was the first half.”

Keairra White led the Sunbirds (0-11, 0-4) in scoring with 22 points, nearly two points above her season average of 20.3. Kayla Clement was the only other Sunbird to hit double figures with 17 points on 5-12 shooting from three.

Callie Rhoads dropped 16 on FPU as the Sea Lions (4-5, 2-1) got three players in double figures. Carlott Kloppenburg added 11 and Andrea Campbell chipped in 10 for a Point Loma team that shot nearly 45-percent from the floor.

A run at the end of the first half put the Sunbirds in a deep hole as the Sea Lions scored 11 points in the final 1:16 to go up 34-23 at the break.
Fresno Pacific battled back and even took a lead at 44-43 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half thanks to back-to-back-to-back threes by Clement.

The Sea Lions answered right back with another big run to go back up by 11 with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
“We need to convert and make shots and not have lapses of being flat and slow,” said Scholz.

Breanna Buczeck cut the lead to five with a layup late in the game but the lead proved to be insurmountable.

The Sunbirds struggled again from the floor shooting just 26.4-perecent but were able to stay in the game thanks to a big rebounding edge at 51-40 including a 25-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

“It only takes one person often to get it going,” said Scholz. “We just have to continue to work on getting more consistent with rebounding and tonight was a good start.”

Fresno Pacific will continue their search for their first win of the season this Saturday against Azusa Pacific in Azusa, CA.
