Fresno Pacific scored a big win in their morning match before falling to Chapman in the afternoon on the final day of the Lancer Invitational.
The Sunbirds (9-3) started the day with a 9-8 win over La Verne. The Jaguars are receiving votes in the most recent NCAA Top 20 Water Polo Poll.
Freshman Daniel Seymour led the way in scoring throughout the defensive slugfest. His two first quarter goals gave FPU the early 2-1 advantage and the Sunbirds were able to maintain they one goal lead throughout.
Seymour finished the match with three goals for Fresno Pacific. Zlatko Vlasic and Ian Roos added two goals apiece and Glenn Lyon and Daniel Shunichev chipped in a goal each.
Jake Finney was solid in goal for the Sunbirds stopping nine shots in the game.
“We came out firing and never looked back,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “The guys played consistent, aggressive and smart. We did exactly what we were supposed to.”
The second game was a different story for Fresno Pacific. FPU stayed with Chapman early before a big third quarter by the Panthers was too much for the Sunbirds to overcome.
Seymour again led the way in scoring with five of FPU's 11 goals. Glenn Lyon chipped in three goals and Vlasic, Roos and Brian Xicotencatl each added one.
“We got away from the game plan,” said Suhovy. “In the third quarter our spacing was off, reaction time slow and they beat us that quarter because of it. We see them again next week so we have some things to work on.”
Fresno Pacific finished the Lancer Invitational with a 2-2 record in their toughest competition to date of this season.
“It was a good weekend overall,” said Suhovy. “We finished with a .500 record and had our first real tests of the season.”
The Sunbirds will be back out on the road this next weekend at the Claremont Convergence.
