Sunbirds earn 1-1 tie at BYU-Hawaii

Box Score Fresno Pacific played a talented BYU-Hawaii team to a 1-1 tie on its home field in Hawaii on Monday, the second game of its four-game Hawaii trip.

Jae Slocum netted the goal for the Sunbirds early in the second half, putting FPU up 1-0. Jessica Castillo played a through ball and Slocum took it for a one-on-one situation with the keeper, scoring her first goal of the season. The Seasiders would respond with a 75th minute goal off a corner kick as Terryn Soelberg scored from Kassy Binning.

The Sunbirds would create many opportunities in the final 15 minutes, but couldn't put any of them away. Sarah Reed had the best chance with just a couple minutes left, getting a deflection and taking a shot that hit the post and bounced straight down, narrowly missing a goal. Neither team could muster many chances in the two overtime periods.

"It's unfortunate that we couldn't come away with the win, but we're happy to at least get the draw against a very good team," said head coach Erik Farfan. "We did a good job of creating chances and it was another great game by Sarah King and the defense. We need to get better at finishing those chances but we're headed in the right direction and looking forward to Thursday's match.

The Seasiders went 12-3-1 last season, finishing third in the PacWest and are consistently in the league's upper echelon.

FPU is now 1-3-3 on the season, 1-1-2 in PacWest play. The Seasiders are now 4-1-1, 2-0-1 in the PacWest.

The Sunbirds face Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 3 pm local time (6 pm Pacific).
