Sunbirds sweep double-header against Cal Tech

The Sunbirds tied the best start in FPU history with a pair of dominating wins over the Cal Tech Beavers 16-2 and 15-4.

Newcomer Justin Lopez-Lamb led the Sunbirds (5-1) in the first game scoring four goals for FPU. Lopez-Lamb was helped out by three goals apiece from Daniel Seymour and Ian Roos. Glenn Lyon and Zlatko Vlasic tallied two goals each.

The Sunbirds started quickly scoring six goals in the first quarter and continuing the dominance from there.

More impressive than the 16 on the board was the two that they allowed Cal Tech to score.

“We've been working hard on our structure and our transition and just balancing a lot of things we have been working on,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “Our passing was a lot better, our defense is solid and on offense we are starting to see some of our options.”

The second game was equally impressive as the Sunbirds walked away with a 15-4 victory.

Lyon led the attack with four goals and Andreas Sahlberg scored three for FPU.

Jake Finney was stout in goal for the Sunbirds with nine saves in another great defensive performance by FPU.

Cal Tech was unable to put up quality shots all day and was continually battling the 30 second shot clock. The defense by Fresno Pacific led to poor shots which in turn led to the easy offensive opportunities at the other end.

“I feel today was a step closer to reaching our end goal,” said Suhovy. “The guys worked hard and implemented a lot of the things we have talked about.

The Sunbirds will head to Merced next week to take on Merced College at 6 pm.
