Fresno Pacific used a 6-1 fourth-quarter to defeat NCAA Division III #10 La Verne 15-9, but the day ended on a sour note as the Sunbirds were unable to avenge a narrow defeat from earlier this season, falling 13-12 to #8 Chapman at the Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis.
The Sunbirds (4-9) led 9-8 after three quarters before
Andreas Sahlberg and
Craig Ritchie each found the net twice in the fourth to help the team break away.
Mateja Maksimovic led a balanced offense with three goals.
Nick Fadden,
Stephen Chafi and
Glenn Lyon scored twice each.
Jake Finney made seven saves in the win.
"We started out slow but once we got warmed up we really opened up in the second half," said coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We had more stamina and a little more depth and it showed as the guys settled in."
FPU came into the second game eager to avenge a 13-11 loss to Chapman just one week ago. The Sunbirds would play well and have the game right there for the taking, but would come up just short.
"We played good polo," said Suhovy. "They just capitalized on our little mistakes. It was a very frustrating loss."
The game was tied at halftime but Chapman scored six goals in the third quarter to take an 11-8 lead. The Sunbirds fell behind 12-8 early in the fourth but goals by Maksimovic, Fadden and Ritchie brought the team within one with 2:42 to play.
Chapman's Mark Alvarado answered on the other end to make it 13-11, but Maksimovic quickly answered back on the next possession. The Sunbirds would have chances in the final minute, but it wouldn't be enough.
Maksimovic and Lyon each finished with four goals. Fadden and Ritchie added two apiece. Finney made eight saves in goal.
FPU's road gets tougher from here as the team takes on defending NCAA runner-up #3 Cal tomorrow before playing a rematch with host #9 UC Davis. The Sunbirds fell 13-7 in a hard-fought game with the Aggies in Fresno on September 9.
Sunday
#3 Cal 17, Fresno Pacific 1
#9 UC Davis 15, Fresno Pacific 3
FPU lost both its games with top NCAA teams on Sunday. In game one
Nick Fadden gave the Sunbirds a 1-0 lead in the first minute on the NCAA defending national runner-up Golden Bears, but Cal would score 17 unanswered.
In the second game, FPU did not fare as well as its first meeting with UC Davis (a 13-7 loss in Fresno). Fadden,
Andreas Sahlberg and
Glenn Lyon scored for the Sunbirds.
