Sunbirds have chances, but fall 1-0 to #15 Cougars

Box Score

Fresno Pacific turned in a solid performance against the NAIA's #15 team, but the Sunbirds couldn't find the net in a 1-0 home loss to CSU San Marcos.

The teams played scoreless soccer for the first 56 minutes before CSUSM's Shannon Cox played a ball into a large group of players congregated in the box and Courtney Kay capitalized on the confusion by scoring the game's only goal.

The Cougars (3-0) controlled the majority of the possession, but the Sunbirds (2-1) had plenty of chances. FPU's best chance to score came late in the first half when Tori Alvarez broke away from the defense and hit Jae Slocum with a timely pass. Cougar goalie Kaycee Gunion made a great save on Slocum's shot however.

CSUSM out-shot the Sunbirds 13-7 and pressured for most of the game but a good all-around performance from FPU goalie Catherine Michaelis and some solid play in the back by Sara Vega, Colleen Rooney, Grecia Bustos and Aeriel Sanders would help keep the Cougars at bay.

The Sunbirds will regroup and be back in action next Friday, on the road at Menlo at 3 pm. The team returns home on the 17th to host William Jessup at 5 pm.
