Mateja Maksimovic scored five goals,
Nick Fadden added four and
Jake Finney made 11 saves as Fresno Pacific withstood a late run by Cal Lutheran to edge the Kingsmen 12-11 on Friday night.
The Sunbirds earned their first road victory of the season against the NCAA Division III's #5-ranked team, fighting back from a 7-6 halftime deficit to go up by three goals in the fourth quarter and hanging on for the win.
"Our outside shooting was lights-out tonight," said FPU coach
Bryan Suhovy. "It was a good way to open up the weekend."
Fadden tied the game early in the third quarter before
Sascha Ludwig gave the team the lead 8-7. Maksimovic then took over with three goals to close the period and give the Sunbirds an 11-9 lead heading into the fourth.
The team would extend the lead to 12-9 with a Fadden goal with 6:48 to play, but that would be FPU's final score of the night. Finney and the defense stepped up their game however, holding the Kingsmen scoreless over the final 2:10 to seal the victory.
Maksimovic and Fadden combined for nine goals while
Glenn Lyon added two in the win.
FPU continues play in Thousand Oaks tomorrow, taking on two more ranked NCAA Division III opponents. The Sunbirds face #6 M.I.T. at 9 am and #10 Chapman later in the day.
