Fresno Pacific concluded its non-conference schedule on Friday by winning its fourth straight game, defeating Holy Names 90-72 at the Peninsula Hoops Classic in Atherton.
Brandi Blackwell had 20 points and 14 rebounds, while
Jenay Herring finished with 16 points, 10 assists and five steals to lead the Sunbirds (10-4) to another victory heading into the GSAC schedule.
Fresno Pacific exploded for 90 points behind a balanced scoring attack that had four players score 14 points or more. Blackwell led the way with 20, Herring 16,
Callie Rohrbacker 16, and
Kayla Clement added 14 for FPU.
The Sunbirds shot the ball extremely well on the night, totaling 11 three-point baskets from Clement (4), Rohrbacker (4),
Sienna Gonzales (2), and
Callie Kloubec (1) as they shot 45 percent from downtown for the night.
Fresno Pacific was red hot from three-point range in the first half to jump out to a 44-32 halftime lead. FPU also got to the free-throw line 16 times in the half, making 13. Herring led the offensive attack with 10 points in the half.
While the offense was clicking, the Sunbirds were just as effective on the defensive end holding the Hawks to 28 percent shooting going into the half. Blackwell was dominant inside, providing eight points and nine rebounds in the half.
FPU continued the hot shooting in the second half, breaking open the game with a 20-6 run to push the lead to 64-38. Clement contributed with 8 points (two threes) during the run and Blackwell added six.
The Sunbirds finished off the victory playing consistent basketball on both ends of the floor en route to the 18-point victory. FPU shot 45 percent overall for the day and held Holy Names to 35 percent shooting.
Brittany Potestio led Holy Names with 22 points on the night, as she led all scorers.
The win brings FPU's overall record to 10-4 heading into the rest of GSAC play. FPU went 6-0 against California Pacific Conference teams during the non-conference schedule. The Sunbirds take on The Master's in Santa Clarita on Tuesday January 3rd at 5:30 p.m. as they look to improve to 3-0 in conference play.
