Sunbirds fly past Hawks 80-60

Box Score

In just a six-minute span, Fresno Pacific turned a four-point lead into a 24-point lead, using a 20-0 second-half run to earn an 80-60 road victory over Holy Names in Oakland on Tuesday night. Keairra White scored a season-high 22 points, Jenay Herring had 19 to go with eight assists and Keri Stephanoff added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Leading 37-33, Herring would be the sparkplug, knocking down two consecutive three-pointers, then driving in for another bucket to make it 45-33. She would score 10 points of FPU's 20 points during the run while the Sunbirds locked down the Hawks on defense to go up 57-33. The team wouldn't look back from that point, improving to 5-1 on the season with the win.

"Our team maintained great focus and composure throughout the entire game," coach Erin Scholz would say afterward. "We have a short bench right now and were missing our only true size in the post with Stephanie [Larson] out. I'm proud of our girls for not making excuses and getting the job done tonight. Our bench didn't miss a beat. It was a fun game to coach and a fun game to watch."

The Sunbirds turned in a quality defensive effort, forcing 23 Hawk turnovers, while doing a good job of taking care of the ball on offense by turning the ball over a season-low 10 times. Herring had a team-high four steals and Breana Buczek added 10 points in the victory.

FPU began to break away in the first half, going on a 15-3 run to break a 19-19 tie. White would be the spark during that run, scoring 10 points in the span.

Soulija Evans had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Hawks, with Annie Mahoney adding 15 points and 11 boards. Sarah Kilewer added a game-high 14 rebounds as the Hawks out-rebounded FPU 55-37 in a losing effort.

The Sunbirds will travel to Idaho for Thanksgiving and compete in the Best Western Lady Yote Classic where they'll take on College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon on Friday and Saturday.
