Box Score
#9 Fresno Pacific couldn't hold off an upstart Westmont team on Tuesday night, as the Warriors pulled off their second major upset in as many games, defeating FPU 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20) in Santa Barbara.
FPU (14-9, 10-5 GSAC) out-hit the Warriors .236 to .201 and held a lead in the majority of the sets but struggled to close them out, digging themselves a 2-0 hole that they couldn't climb out of. It was Westmont's first victory over FPU since 1994.
Erica Adachi had 44 assists and 10 digs to pace the Sunbirds.
Jessie Alcorn led the Sunbirds' attack with 18 kills, while
Martina Gregusova added 17 kills and 16 digs.
Kathleen Anderson finished with 12 kills.
Westmont (10-13, 8-7 GSAC) had plenty of momentum coming into Tuesday night's match, having knocked off #11 Biola over the weekend right after Biola had defeated #1 Texas-Brownsville. Madison Serrano led the Warriors with 12 kills and Candice Adema dished out 36 assists in the win.
After dropping the first two sets, the Sunbirds looked phenomenal in set three, hitting a season-high .667 with 17 kills to just one error and cruising to the 25-16 win.
The Sunbirds led 16-13 in set four, but multiple attack errors down the stretch doomed the Sunbirds as Westmont outscored them 12-4 over the last 16 points. FPU hit just .067 in the final set.
The team looks to get out of this funk on Saturday when they face a tough Vanguard team on the road. The Lions are ranked #13 and defeated the Sunbirds 3-0 in Fresno earlier this season.
