Women's soccer season comes to an end at top-seed PLNU

Box Score

SAN DIEGO -
The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team saw its season come to a disappointing end on Tuesday as the #8-seed Sunbirds fell 6-0 at #1-seed Point Loma Nazarene in the first round of the GSAC playoffs.

Though the team trailed just 1-0 at halftime, the game got away from the Sunbirds in the second half as they surrendered five goals. Erica Wessels and Krista Gregory each scored twice for the NAIA #4 Sea Lions, who improved to 17-1-1 on the season.

FPU, which was out-shot 19-6 in the game, finishes its season with a record of 6-9. The Sunbirds started out the season 5-1, but dropped eight of their last nine games.

Jae Slocum, Sara Vega and Natalie Chaney each had two shots to lead the Sunbirds. Catherine Michaelis made six saves in goal in her final game in a Sunbird uniform.

Tiffany Kracy recorded the shutout in goal for the Sea Lions, who scored four times during a 15-minute span early in the second half to put the game well out of reach.

FPU's leading scorer, Demi Hamilton, who suffered an injury in the last game was able to come off the bench but was definitely not 100 percent. The Sunbirds were plagued by injuries all season, seeing their top returning scorer go down in the offseason and their top defender suffer a similar injury at the beginning of the year.

The team is hoping to be fully healthy next season, as the Sunbirds will return many key players that could make them a contender in their first season in the NCAA Division II's Pacific West Conference.
