Early goal doesn't hold vs. undefeated Sea Lions

Box Score

FPU took a 1-0 lead on an undefeated PLNU team that had only allowed two goals all season, but despite a well-played game the lead wouldn't hold as the Sunbirds fell 2-1 to the #8 Sea Lions in San Diego on Saturday.

"We were very pleased with our performance today against a very talented and nationally ranked PLNU side," said Sunbird coach Erik Farfan. "Having taken the early lead, it's vital that we continue to understand and believe that we can compete agains the best teams in the country. Today's performance and mindset was definitely a step in affirming that."

It had been more than a month since a team had scored a goal on the Sea Lions (11-0-1, 3-0 GSAC), but the Sunbirds (5-3, 1-2 GSAC) managed to do so just seven minutes into the game when Jae Slocum crossed in a ball for Demi Hamilton who netted her fifth goal of the season when the PLNU keeper couldn't hang on.

The Sea Lions would score the equalizer in the 24th minute however when forward Katie Pedlowe delivered a shot to the left post. PLNU took the lead in the 31st minute after an FPU foul was called in the box, giving the Sea Lions a penalty kick which Erica Wessels would bury in what proved to be the game-winner.

The Sunbirds would manage just two shots in the second half, as they saw their hopes of an upset fade. PLNU held the shot advantage on the day 20-7, but Sarah King made seven saves in goal for FPU.

The Sunbirds have now played back to back games against the GSAC's top two teams, looking much better today than they did in a 3-0 home loss to #3 Azusa Pacific on Tuesday. Next up for the Sunbirds is Biola (5-5, 2-1 GSAC), who they'll face in La Mirada on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
