Box Score
Two early goals and a stout Azusa Pacific defense were too much to overcome for Fresno Pacific on Tuesday night as the NAIA's #3 Cougars downed the Sunbirds 3-0 at Ramirez Field. The Cougars (5-1-1, 1-1 GSAC) out-shot the Sunbirds 25-6 in the victory as FPU fell to 5-2 on the season and 0-12 all-time vs. the Cougars.
APU struck the net just over two minutes into the game off a Natalie Nick corner kick that was driven in by an unmarked Lynsey Browne. The Cougars added their second goal in similar fashion less than 10 minutes later as Nick sent another corner in that was redirected by Danielle Ross for the score.
The Sunbirds were out-shot 13-1 in the first half, but looked much better in the final 45 minutes getting five shots including one very good chance on a breakaway by
Jae Slocum. FPU held strong on defense in the second half as well, with APU's goal coming on a foul called in the box resulting in a Natalie Sun penalty kick.
Sarah King kept the team in the game as well with seven saves in just 45 minutes of action in the second half. APU had the majority of the possession, and had 10 corner kicks to FPU's one.
The Cougars had been ranked #1 in the NAIA last week before a 1-0 loss over the weekend to #8 Point Loma Nazarene, who is also FPU's next opponent. The Sunbirds square off with the undefeated Sea Lions in San Diego at 12 pm on Saturday.
