Late push gives CBU 14-7 win over Sunbirds

#18 Cal Baptist 14, Fresno Pacific 7

Early on it looked like an upset might be in the making but visiting Cal Baptist used an 11-3 run to pull away from Fresno Pacific at Clovis High on Thursday night.

The Sunbirds (9-21) played neck and neck with the NCAA #18 Lancers for the first 12 minutes, before CBU rattled off three goal to end the first half. The Lancers went into halftime with a 6-3 lead and extended it with two quick goals to start the second half.

Glenn Lyon did his best to bring the Sunbirds back, scoring from close-range twice with a defender draped all over him to make the score 9-5. The Sunbirds trailed by four late in the third, but a CBU goal closed out the quarter before the Lancers tacked on three more unanswered in the fourth to put the game away.

Craig Ritchie buried a nice shot from outside to give FPU its final goal of the night. Jake Finney played a phenomenal game in goal, making 10 saves and three steals.

The Sunbirds get another ranked team at home this Saturday, taking on #12 Concordia at 11 am at Clovis High School. The Eagles have defeated FPU twice this season, both times by seven goals.
