Sunbirds edged by Vanguard

Box Score

FPU's difficult stretch of GSAC games continued on Saturday, as the Sunbirds fell 2-0 at home to Vanguard. The Lions (10-2-1, 2-2-1 GSAC) scored in the 12th and 83rd minutes to hand the Sunbirds (5-5, 1-4 GSAC) their fourth consecutive defeat.

FPU looked good at times, but the early goal set the tone for the Lions. The Sunbirds had many chances to tie it, but when VU's Amanda Couch scored with seven minutes to play, the game was essentially out of reach.

Vanguard scored its first goal after corner kick as Jordan Cleary, instead of playing it into the box, made a quick pass to Gabriella Valles who drove in a difficult shot from long-range. A Sunbird defender barely got a head on it, but it was a perfect shot to the left side of the net.

The Lions pushed the ball up for the majority of the game and were called for 10 offsides penalties. VU out-shot the Sunbirds 11-8, with both teams taking five shots on goal. Jae Slocum had a team-high three shots for FPU and drew most of the attention of the Lion defense.

Catherine Michaelis played well in goal, making three saves and stopping many other plays ahead of time with good anticipation. Lauren Terry had five saves for the Lions, posting the shutout.

The Sunbirds are back in action on Tuesday, going on the road to face #21 The Master's at 7 pm as the tough GSAC schedule continues.
