#3 Concordia def. #6 Fresno Pacific 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18)
Box Score
The visiting Eagles snapped FPU's 9-match winning streak, winning in Fresno for the first time in the program's history. CUI (17-1, 6-0 GSAC) won its 16th straight as FPU (9-4, 5-1 GSAC) dropped its first GSAC match of the season.
The Sunbirds held CUI's two best attackers to under .200 hitting, but with the rest of the Eagles team stepping up and the Sunbirds creating too many unforced errors, it would not be FPU's day.
"They won the serve and pass game," said FPU coach
Kelly Winter. "Offensively and defensively I felt like we played well, and we had more blocks than them, we just didn't handle the ball well."
The Eagles' gameplan involved keying in on Sunbird middle blocker
Kathleen Anderson, who was limited to a season-low six kills.
Martina Gregusova led the Sunbirds with 12 kills and
Jessie Alcorn added 10. Gregusova led the team with 14 digs and
Emily Carroll had 29 assists.
Concordia's balanced attack included nine kills apiece from Brooke Marino and Maddy Ekis. Three others had more than six. The Eagles had 10 service aces to FPU's two. Kara Vincitorio led the team with 10 digs.
After dropping the first set despite outhitting CUI .353 to .289, FPU built up an early lead in set two. The Sunbirds led a 10-9 but fell apart after that, hitting just .105 in the set. The third set was more of the same, with FPU never really able to build momentum.
One stat the Sunbirds did lead in was blocks, where Gregusova and
Amy Siemens posted five apiece.
The Sunbirds will look to get back on track this Tuesday night as they host Westmont at 7 pm. Westmont is coming off a huge upset win over #12 Biola.
Fans that attend Tuesday's game will have a chance to win tickets to the Fresno Fair and to see Third Day in concert.
