Sunbirds fall 72-53 at #12 Vanguard

Box Score

Fresno Pacific started out well but was unable to maintain momentum for a full 40 minutes, falling 72-53 to #12 Vanguard in Costa Mesa on Saturday.

The Sunbirds jumped out to an 11-4 lead, holding the Lions to just four points in the game's first ten minutes. Michele Rebozzi, Sienna Gonzales and Callie Rohrbacker all hit three-pointers to get FPU off on the right foot.

Unfortunately Vanguard would find its stride in the last ten minutes of the first half, going on a 16-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Tineka Spencer would score to end the drought for FPU, but the damage had been done and Vanguard went into the break with a 28-18 lead.

The second half didn't fare any better for the Sunbirds. Jessica Torrecillas scored five quick points at the start, but the Lions continued to pour the offense on, shooting 50 percent in the second half. FPU would trail by as many as 27 in the second half.

Torrecillas finished with 13 points to lead the Sunbirds, who dropped their eighth-straight game and fell to 7-15. Jenay Herring added 11 points and five assists, Rebozzi had 10 points and Rohrbacker finished with nine. Kelly Thompson had a game-high eight rebounds.

Vanguard improved to 8-4 in conference play with the win. Molly Pfohl led the Lions with 20 points and Chelsea Alfafara added 19. Sarah Boyd had 10 assists and six steals in the win.

The Sunbirds hit the road again early next week, taking on 7-5 The Master's (14-7, 7-5 GSAC) on Tuesday night. The first meeting between TMC and FPU came down to the final possession.
