It was another hard-fought game for Fresno Pacific, but the #24 Westmont Warriors protected their home court and defeated the Sunbirds 69-59.
Jessica Torrecillas scored more than 20 points for the fourth consecutive game, finishing with 21, but the Sunbirds were done in by Westmont scoring spurts at the start of each half.
After falling behind 9-0 the Sunbirds outscored the Warriors the rest of the half to go into the break down 31-27. The Warriors would similarly start the second half with a 9-0 run, putting FPU down by 13 early in the second half.
The Warriors (13-4, 5-4 GSAC) would extend the lead to as many as 16, but the Sunbirds refused to let up and used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to six, 54-48, with 8:44 remaining. That was as close as the team would come however, the Sunbirds drawing within seven in the final five minutes before a 7-0 Westmont run effectively ended the team's chances.
The Sunbirds drop to 7-12, 0-9 in GSAC play and have now lost five straight, all conference games.
Jenay Herring scored 11 points to go with three steals and
Breana Buczek added nine points and five assists. Torrecillas was the leading rebounder with seven.
Five players scored in double figures for the Warriors, led by Angel Blanco's 16 and Katie Kittle's 14.
The Sunbirds shot 44 percent from the field and 55 percent from three-point range, but only got to the free-throw line two times.
FPU will be back at home this Saturday for an afternoon game against the conference's first-place team, #6 Cal Baptist, at 2:30 pm.
