FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific (27-13, 19-13 GSAC) found some last minute heroics in both of their victories over Biola (23-19, 15-17 GSAC). The Sunbirds won 17-13 and 7-6 in their doubleheader with a walk-off grand slam in the 12th inning and a two-run response to a three-run Biola-inning in game-two.
In the first game, Biola hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to tie the game at 12-12. Biola hoped to end the game in the 11th inning with a one-run lead, but
Matt Souza hit a solo home run to tie the game.
Alec Mehrten approached the plate with the bases loaded in the 12th inning, and connected for a grand slam on the first pitch.
Jared Coleman and Mehrten each had four RBIs for the Sunbirds in game-one. Coleman had a two-run home run for the Sunbirds in the fifth inning.
Game two was tighter throughout. Biola led 3-2 going into the bottom of the third inning, but the Sunbirds responded with three runs to put them up. However, Biola bounced back with three runs of their own.
Mehrten led off the fourth inning with his second home run of the day to tie the game 6-6, and
Tyler Pryor hit in the would-be game winning run in the same inning.
Michael RIvera came in to pitch the final four innings to hold Biola scoreless while striking out three of Biola's final six batters. Rivera finished the game allowing two hits and no runs with five strikeouts.
Matt Mazzoni finished game-one for the win, pitching 3.2 innings without a hit or an earned run.
The Sunbirds finish their series with Biola 3-1 and remain entrenched in fourth place in the GSAC standings. No. 11 Vanguard remains two wins ahead of the Sunbirds.
On Tuesday, April 27 the Sunbirds will break from conference play to face San Francisco State for their second meeting of the season. Previously, the Sunbirds defeated San Francisco State 11-0. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. in San Francisco.
