FRESNO, Calif. - No. 19 Fresno Pacific (23-11, 15-11 GSAC) had two tight games that both went differently than the Sunbirds had hoped. The Sunbirds lost to No. 13 Vanguard (28-9, 19-7 GSAC) by one run in both of their meetings during their doubleheader.
In game-one, the Sunbirds gave up four runs in the first inning and trailed 5-0 after six innings. The Sunbirds fought back scoring two runs in back-to-back innings, but did not have enough to close the deficit falling 5-4.
In game-two, the Sunbirds had the lead after the sixth inning after scoring three runs to go up 5-3, but they gave up three runs in the seventh to fall back behind by the final score of 6-5.
Jared Coleman did his best to keep the Sunbirds in the games hitting a homerun in each of the games, and actually hitting them within three innings of each other. Coleman hit a two-run homerun in the eighth inning of game-one and then opened game-two with a lead-off homerun.
Coleman finished the day 5-for-9 with 4 RBIs and 2 homeruns.
Kelyn Schellenberg struggled in the first inning giving up four runs, but settled down only allowing four hits and one more run in the next five innings. The Sunbirds' bullpen came in for the final three innings to shutdown Vanguard, not allowing a hit or a run, but it was not enough to allow the Sunbirds' offense to come back from the large deficit.
Schellenberg received the loss along with
David Hawes in game-two. Hawes pitched 6.2 innings and allowed 9 hits, 4 earned runs and had 10 strikeouts.
The Sunbirds will head to Costa Mesa to take on Vanguard for another doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. Their first game will begin at 12 noon.
