Brandon Croft finished 22nd at the GSAC Championship meet at Woodward Park on Saturday, leading all FPU finishers. The freshman finished the 8K course in 26:20.
“Brandon definitely rose to the occasion today,” said FPU head coach Eric Schwab “He's made the adjustment to the 8K distance. He made it early on and has not had a bad race this season.”
The FPU men finished seventh as a team, beating out Concordia and Point Loma Nazarene, while the Sunbird women placed ninth.
Croft was followed by Isai Orea, who finished below his normal time and came in 29th at 26:31. The Sunbirds 3-4-5 runners finished strong with freshman Zach Segovia leading that pack with a time of 28:10 to put him 50th.
Artem Pyryev finished just six seconds later and Marvin Ortiz placed four spots after him to pull the Sunbirds ahead of their closest competitors.
Schwab commented that freshman Doug Daniel also had a strong race as the team's sixth runner.
On the women's side, Schwab complimented Sarah Tomamichel and Deirdre Wyrick for having some of their better races of the season.
Amanda Johnson led FPU with a 46th place finish, but was clearly fighting through some pain as she finished significantly lower than her usual time. Megan Barnard came in six spots later as the Sunbirds second finisher.
Wyrick and Tomamichel finished within two seconds of each other in 55th and 56th, and Jessie Alanis rounded out the top five four places later.
Vanessa Carrasco and Amanda Straw came in as the team's last two runners and finished strong so that FPU could pull past San Diego Christian by one point for ninth place.
Biola won the women's title, finishing one point ahead of Azusa Pacific. The Master's captured the men's crown, also edging out the Cougars.
The Sunbirds' season has come to an end, but the team brings back a lot of youth next season, especially on the men's side.
“It's been a rewarding season,” said Schwab. “A lot of our athletes reached their potential.”
