Azusa, Calif. - Fresno Pacific (5-9-2, 3-5-1 GSAC) hung tough with first-place Azusa Pacific (13-1-2, 8-1-1 GSAC) during a scoreless first half, but gave up two quick goals to start the second period and ultimately fell 3-1 to the NAIA #3 Cougars.
The Sunbirds were out-shot 27 to 4 as the Cougars did not let up the attack throughout the match. FPU's
Sara Vega cut into the deficit in the 82nd minute, capitalizing on a critical defensive mistake to make it 2-1. The Cougars quickly responded with a goal five minutes later for the 3-1 final.
APU took the lead in the 46th minute after a scramble in front of the net was tapped in by Allie Stone. Kelsey Walker, who was credited with the assist on the first goal, gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead just a minute later by driving in a shot from 28 yards out.
Walker would net the third goal as well, picking up a rebounded shot by Brittany Flanagan. The Cougars kept FPU goalie
Catherine Michaelis busy all day and the Sunbird keeper finished with eight saves.
The Sunbirds face #25 Point Loma Nazarene in the regular season finale at home on Saturday at 11 am. It will be senior day for three FPU players,
Jessica Pereschica,
Amanda Sherr and
Liz Baldwin. The team currently has the #7 seed for the conference playoffs.
