Sunbirds have many chances, but fail to score in overtime loss

Box Score

Fresno Pacific went toe-to-toe with visiting #25 Concordia for 94 minutes, but surrendered a goal in overtime to lose 1-0.

CUI (6-2-2, 1-0-1 GSAC) scored four minutes into overtime as midfielder Tamara Chagas found the net on a shot from the top of the box. The Sunbirds fall to 3-6-1, 1-2 in conference play.

“After a tough first half the game turned around and I felt that we could have put the game away," said head coach Erik Farfan. "It's tough being put in a goal-to-goal situation. We'll keep building from here. There were positive things that came from today's game.”

The Sunbirds fought hard to create chances throughout the game. Demi Hamilton led the team with three shot attempts, followed by Jessica Pereschica, Sarah Reed, and Kathy Barreto. The defense was able to keep the ball away from the goal and worked together with the offense to get the ball in motion.

The intensity picked up in the second half, as the Eagles brought more pressure. FPU goalie Catherine Michaelis had some great saves that kept the team in the game. She had a total of nine saves, a season-high.

Midway through the second half Hamilton broke away from the Eagles defense and had an attempt on goal that sailed wide. On the defensive side, Ashley Tallon had some great slide tackles that kept the Eagles from scoring.Despite numerous chances from both sides, the half closed with a score of 0-0 with Michaelis gathering an Eagle shot in the closing seconds.

The game went into overtime, and the pressure was up for the Sunbirds to be the first to score. Pereschica made a goal attempt from the side, but it was the Eagles who scored first four minutes in for the 1-0 victory.

The Sunbirds are back in action next Saturday here in Fresno as they take on #4 Cal Baptist (7-2, 1-1). The Lancers will likely drop in the polls after a 5-1 home loss to #12 The Master's today.
