Sunbirds' bats defeat Azusa Pacific

No. 24 Fresno Pacific hit in 16 runs on No. 6 Azusa

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 24 Fresno Pacific (23-10, 17-9 GSAC) completed the sweep over No. 6 Azusa Pacific (26-9, 16-8) winning 16-12.  Both teams were hitting well, but the Sunbirds beat Azusa on the offensive side out-hitting them 20 to 15.

 

Jacob Burns led the Sunbirds with four RBIs hitting four-for-six.  #Joey Norwood and Dwight Nixon# followed with three RBIs each.  Norwood hit three-for five while Nixon only hit one-for-five, but had a three-run homerun in the fourth inning, where the Sunbirds had eight runs to jump ahead of Azusa 11-2.

 

Tyler Pryor also had a two-run homerun in the eighth inning.  Pryor hit three-for-six with two runs on the day.

 

David Hawes earned the win pitching six innings and allowing six hits, four runs and two walks with five strikeouts.

 

The Sunbirds led 13-5 going into the final two innings, and despite Azusa scoring seven runs in the final two innings, the Sunbirds held off their comeback.  #Brian Oliver# came in for the final inning to close.  Even though Oliver gave up three runs, he finished the game with a double play catching a line drive and throwing out the runner on first.

 

Saturday, April 4 the Sunbirds will travel to Irvine to take on Concordia.  Last weekend Concordia split their series with Azusa, and the Sunbirds will need to beat the Eagles to carry their momentum into next week's polls.  The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
