Sunbirds split with Vanguard; Keeney homer to win

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific (21-10, 15-9 GSAC) were on the verge of being swept going into the final inning against Vanguard (14-15, 10-12 GSAC), but Justin Keeney changed that with a two-run homerun to defeat Vanguard 4-3.  The Sunbirds lost the first game 6-9.

Keeney went two-for-two with two RBIs and two walks in game two, leading the Sunbirds to their victory.  Anthony Lowell also had a two-run homerun for the Sunbirds.  Brian Oliver got the win coming in to close for the Sunbirds and held up the lead from Keeney's homerun.  Oliver pitched two innings only giving up one hit.

Keeney played well even in the Sunbirds loss; Keeney hit one-for-five with two RBIs.  Jake Burns also had two RBIs for the Sunbirds in game one, while Case Rigby had one RBI as he hit two-for-three with one walk.

The Sunbirds took the lead in the fourth inning with five hits and four runs for that one inning, but in the fifth inning Vanguard responded even bigger with seven hits and five runs to take a 9-5 lead over the Sunbirds.

The Sunbirds will return home to take on No. 6 Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1 and 2 in back-to-back games.  Wednesday's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. while Thursday's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
