Fresno, Calif. – In a game that almost got out of control, Fresno Pacific men walked away with it to open their tournament. The pool heated up with two bloodied players, a rare goalie ejection and a yellow card for the Maritime club coach. Despite the aggressive play on both sides, the Sunbirds beat Cal Maritime 14-3.
Gabe Calderon and Krisztian Kovacs both had three goals, which lead the Sunbirds scores. Two of Kovacs' goals came late in third on back-to-back possessions.
Riley Warner and Caleb Goings shared cage time again holding Maritime to three goals with five saves and nine saves, respectively.
The Sunbirds kept their momentum from their win over Santa Cruz last night coming out with a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, and extending the lead at halftime 6-1. The Sunbirds never looked back in the second half, especially in the fourth where they outscored Maritime 4-0 to finish with a score of 14-3.
The day is not over for the polo team, in only a couple hours the Sunbirds will return to the Sunnyside Pool to take on San Jose. If Fresno Pacific can beat San Jose they will play in the championship game later tonight.
