Sunbirds Lose to Lions

Fresno, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team got off to a slow start this evening and was shutout by #22 Vanguard University of Southern California, falling to the Lions 0-2. This was the second loss in a row for the Sunbirds and the second consecutive game without a goal.

An uninspired FPU first half, coupled by a solid defensive effort from VUSC, left the Sunbirds minimal scoring opportunities, and without a shot through the first 45 minutes of play. Conversely, the Lions were able to tally 12 shots in the opening half and eventually scored the go ahead goal in the 28th minute on an Erika Barlow header. The first half would end with the Sunbirds trailing 0-1.

To open the second half of play, FPU was able to come out with more purpose and determination, and created a handful of scoring chances. Although the Sunbirds recorded 7 shots and 2 corners in the half, they were unable to breakdown the Lion's defense and were shutout for the second consecutive game.

With FPU trailing 0-1 late in the game and pushing numbers forward in an attempt to equalize, VUSC was able to put the game away for good in the 86th minute. Against the run of play, Lion's leading goal scorer Karri Currier was able to read and intercept an attempted back pass intended for FPU goalkeeper Justine Caldera. With the ball at her feet and nothing between her and the goal but Caldera, Currier buried it for her team high 6th goal of the season to seal the Sunbirds fate.

With the loss the Sunbirds drop to 5-2-2 (1-2), but will look to kick it back into high gear as they host Biola this Tuesday, October 7th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM.
