Costa Mesa, Calif -The NAIA's second ranked FPU men's soccer team was looking to get back on the right track this evening as they traveled to face Vanguard University of Southern California in a Golden State Conference matchup. The Sunbirds were able to earn a point from the Lions after battling for a full 90 minutes and two 10 minute overtime periods, with neither team scoring, and the game ending in a 0-0 draw.
FPU Head Coach Jamie Ramirez was encouraged by his team's performance tonight and was appreciative of the level of intensity the Sunbirds played with throughout the entire game.
“We were able to come out with a different level of intensity tonight which was the plan,” Ramirez said in comparing tonight's effort with that of Tuesday's disappointing performance versus Azusa Pacific. “Also, due to the narrowness of their (Vanguard) field, we had to make a tactical adjustment from our usual 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2. With those things considered, I thought we did pretty well.”
The Sunbirds were able to create some good scoring opportunities throughout the course of the contest tallying 10 shots, with 4 on goal. In the 25th minute, Sunbird Junior Daniel Spieth was able to get a good look at goal, blasting a full volley which was headed on target until ricocheting off teammate Vitor Machado causing it to miss. Machado was later involved in what was perhaps the best chance FPU had to win the match. In the 83rd minute, he found himself with the ball at his feet 15 yards from goal, and simply missed the shot placing it up and over the crossbar.
The Sunbird's defense was able to successfully withstand the Lions attack which consisted of 14 shots, with only two on target, and six corners. Senior Goalkeeper Brandon Cave posted his 4th shutout of the year and recorded 2 saves on the night.
With the tie, the Sunbirds are now 5-1-1 and are an even 1-1-1 in GSAC play. FPU will be back in action next Wednesday October 8th when they host Biola at Ramirez field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM.
