A.J. Blackburn joined the Fresno Pacific Track & Field coaching staff in 2017.
For over twenty-five years, Blackburn has coached Central Valley pole vaulters at Clovis West High School (1997-00), Clovis East High School (2001-16), and Fresno Pacific University (2017-present). Between 2005 – 2013, Blackburn coached five Central Section champions in the boy’s pole vault with numerous athletes earning spots in the Central Section’s all-time rankings. His coaching experience and success at both the NCAA and high school levels have given him an opportunity to create a proven system that develops the athlete from beginner to championship vaulter and has even earned him a feature story in Vaulter Magazine.
Blackburn has had incredible success leading the FPU vaulters, having coached five and six of the respective top 10 record-holders in both the women’s and men’s programs. Notable Sunbirds Nikki Crouch (women’s, 12-8.25) and Keaton Daniel (men’s, 18-0.5) both became FPU’s all-time leaders while under Blackburn’s direction and guidance.

"We strive to cultivate the skills and attitudes needed for lifelong success beyond their athletic endeavors.”
As a vaulter, Blackburn competed for Fresno State, under the direction of renowned coach, Bob Fraley. The Oklahoman by way of Fresno graduated with a BA in History and teaching credential in Social Sciences from Fresno State University. In addition to being a speaker, instructor, and staff clinician at various National Pole Vault Summits throughout his career, he has taught US History and AP Psychology at Clovis East High School since 2001.
Since coming to find faith in the Lord, Blackburn has committed his life and coaching experience to glorify Christ.
