Eagles' Late Surge Overcomes the Sunbirds' Strong Start

FRESNO, Calif. — In the season opener, Fresno Pacific women's soccer lost to Biola 5-1 on Saturday at Ramirez Field. The Sunbirds were the first to score at the 11th minute, but were limited to eight shots while facing 29 from Biola's dominant offense.

The first half opened with several fouls and Biola generated the first looks, including two attempts and an early corner. FPU's newcomer Julianna Hernandez had a shot stopped by a team save at 10:22, but Sophie Rosales scored seven seconds later off Hernandez's assist to put the Sunbirds ahead 1-0. Biola followed with pressure, requiring a Brielle Calhoun save at 14:55 and a team save at 17:44 while adding three corner attempts. It wasn't until the 32:18 mark that BU's Jade Alverio scored to tie the match at 1. The Eagles scored again at 35:37, widening the gap between the two teams. The Lady 'Birds created a late corner opportunity and had shots by Gizelle Aguirre and Royce Kilby, but Fresno Pacific went to halftime down 2-1.

Biola opened the second-half scoring on a penalty kick and a deep shot at 54:00 to put the Sunbirds behind 4-1. After Biola generated additional looks, Calhoun saved several of the Eagles' attempts, and the Sunbirds were able to push forward with Celeste Suarez's attempt at 64:59 and a corner kick at 67:17. The Sunbirds were held scoreless after halftime but earned three corners, including two in a late stretch that also produced shots from Damaris Lopez and Chloe Mortensen, while Calhoun made two saves. Biola managed to score one final goal to boost the score to 1-5 to close out the game.
