Sunbirds Drive Dragons Back in 3-0 Sweep

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fresno Pacific volleyball improved to 5-0 overall with the sweep over Tiffin University on Friday afternoon. The game's scores were as follows (25-20, 25-15, 25-16).

The Sunbirds turned the first set with Madelyn Feramisco serving, moving from a 12-11 deficit to a 15-12 lead behind a Morgan Castaneda kill and Tiffin attack errors, including a block by Itzel Aguayo and Addisen Hamilton. Mikayla Weiss added a kill for a 16-13 lead and later finished the set with a clever shot by Devyn Castaneda, giving the Sunbirds a 25-20 win.

The Sunbirds broke open the second set with six straight points from 13-8 to 19-8, a stretch that included kills by Feramisco and Hamilton, a block by Lola Highstreet and Hamilton, and a Weiss service ace. Earlier, Rylee Pitney had three kills and teamed with Weiss on a block as the Sunbirds moved from 8-5 to 12-5. Feramisco closed the set with a kill from Weiss, giving the Sunbirds a 25-15 set win.

The Blue and Orange built early separation in the third set, using kills from Feramisco, Lauer and Highstreet plus a Castaneda ace to move ahead 10-4. Morgan Castaneda added five kills from that point forward, including consecutive finishes that put the Sunbirds ahead 20-11. Lauer ended the set with a kill from Weiss as the Sunbirds closed the set 25-16.

Outside hitter Castaneda led the Sunbirds with 11 kills while hitting .688 and added one block assist. Weiss recorded 36 assists, six kills on 10 attacks, eight digs, one ace and two block assists. The graduate setter is only 75 assists away from hitting her 2,000 milestone. Middle blocker Pitney posted nine kills while hitting .438 and finished with five total blocks, including one solo block. Libero Castaneda collected 12 digs, five assists and one service ace.

No. 9 Fresno Pacific volleyball continues to climb higher with a 5-0 record and look forward to the next matches against Alaska Anchorage and tournament host, Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Sept. 5.
