FRESNO, Calif. - The National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) released some exciting news this week. Team points and standings for Nationals qualification were released and FPU Esports was in across the board! The points were awarded based on Fall and Spring semester results (regular conference and playoffs) with the top 8-16 teams in each division qualifying.
FPU's Super Smash Bros team is currently sitting top seed out of 56 schools in Division V with 230 points. Their success is due to making playoffs both seasons and having a consistent roster across both semesters. The Sunbirds thought their season was done for the year after their last match against Kansas State. When senior Forsaur (Forrest Gray) heard the news he excitedly said "I thought I was done with collegiate smash for good, I'm pumped to keep playing!" The 'Birds first nationals match will take place on Tuesday April 21st.
FPU Rocket League also made FPU Esports history with both teams qualifying. FPU Orange sits as the sixth seed out of the 77 schools in Division VI with 200+ points. As the Sunbirds still have their semi-finals match on the horizon, there is an opportunity to place even higher. Despite having a rough 0-7 season this spring, FPU Blue still qualified, riding off their points from a much stronger fall semester. Blue sits seventh out of the 40 schools in Division VIII with 125 points. Both teams will take the pitch for FPU Wednesday April 22nd.
FPU Overwatch rounds out the teams going to nationals, sitting fourteenth out of the 55 schools in Division VIII with 129 points and a chance to climb higher after the results of their upcoming semi-finals rematch against Fort Lewis Gold. The 'Birds will have their first National match Friday April 24th.
It's an exciting journey to have four teams make nationals in the program's second year!
