Ninth Inning Comeback Splits the Day for the 'Birds

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — At Hans L'Orange Park, Fresno Pacific baseball (20-17, 15-10) split the final day in Hawaii, securing a 15-8 victory over Hawai'i Pacific (14-15, 12-11) in game one, then ended up falling 7-12 to close out the series.

GAME 1 | FPU 15, HPU 8

Hawai'i Pacific took an early lead in the first inning scoring on a triple to right field. Another Shark followed with an RBI groundout, giving Hawai'i Pacific a 2-0 advantage. Fresno Pacific responded in the second inning as Aaron Martinez Jr. doubled and later scored on Alex Lopez's RBI groundout, narrowing the gap to 2-1.

In the fourth inning, the Sunbirds took the lead. Gabe Henderson doubled and scored on a double by Martinez. Lopez then singled, bringing home Martinez, putting the Sunbirds up 3-2. The fifth inning saw Titus Wheelock's two-run homer extend the Sunbirds' lead to 5-2, but Hawai'i Pacific quickly countered with three runs to tie the game at 5-5 by the end of the inning. Hawai'i Pacific regained the lead in the sixth inning with two runs, moving ahead 7-5.

The Sunbirds reduced the deficit in the seventh inning! FPU's third baseman scored on a fielder's choice, and left fielder Chris Clement scored on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 8-7 in favor of Hawai'i Pacific. Slowly but surely, the 'Birds surged ahead in the eighth inning. Henderson tripled and scored on a wild pitch, while Martinez's single and Lopez's double added another run, giving the Sunbirds a 9-8 lead.

In the ninth inning, Fresno Pacific sealed the victory with a six-run outburst. Vincent Robinson, who pinch ran for Eric Wilson, scored on Holden Hirschkorn's triple. Hirschkorn also scored on a wild pitch. Martinez capped an impressive game by delivering a three-run homer, and Lopez's RBI double topped the scoring, solidifying a 15-8 win for Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds tallied 20 hits, including five doubles and two home runs, to overpower their opponent.

On the mound, Matt Bettencourt pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits, including one home run, while striking out two and walking one. He threw 85 pitches, 54 of which were strikes, and had a WHIP of 2.12. Cruz Cabral provided relief, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up one earned run on one hit, while walking four and striking out five.

GAME 2 | FPU 7, HPU 12

The series finale looked a little different for the 'Birds. Fresno Pacific took an early lead against Hawai'i Pacific with a productive first inning. Darryl Dilworth Jr. walked and advanced on Hirschkorn's single. Henderson also walked to load the bases. Martinez then delivered an RBI single to open the scoring, and Clement followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home another run, giving the Sunbirds a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

In the second inning, the Blue and Orange extended its lead. Lopez was hit by a pitch, and Wilson followed suit, putting FPU in scoring position. Dilworth doubled to center field, driving in Lopez. Hirschkorn singled, bringing home both Wilson and Dilworth, the latter scoring on an error. This pushed the lead to 5-0 through two innings.

Lopez doubled to start the third inning and later scored on a single by Hirschkorn, adding another run for Fresno Pacific. This brought the score to 6-0 by the end of the third inning. However, Hawai'i Pacific responded in the fourth inning, tying the game with a six-run burst. The home team capitalized on walks and a fielder's choice, leveling the score at 6-6.

The Sunbirds were held scoreless in the fifth, while Hawai'i Pacific added four more runs, including an RBI double. This gave Hawai'i Pacific a 10-6 lead. In the sixth inning, the 'Birds managed to score again thanks to Martinez's triple and Lopez's RBI single, cutting the deficit by one. However, Hawai'i Pacific countered with two more runs, extending its lead to 12-7 by the end of the sixth inning. The game concluded with Hawai'i Pacific securing a 12-7 victory over Fresno Pacific.

On the mound, Dustin Tinsley started for the Sunbirds, pitching 3 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 2 hits while striking out 3 batters and issuing 5 walks.

Despite going 1-3 in the series against Hawaii Pacific, the Sunbirds are 20-18 overall and 15-11 in conference. They are ranked fourth in conference, trailing behind Point Loma (No. 1), Westmont (No. 2) and Concordia University Irvine (No. 3).
