11-0 Shutout for the 'Birds Garners Series Sweep Over Silverswords

Bettencourt Pitches Complete Game & Wheelock Hits Seventh Home Run

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Fresno Pacific baseball wrapped up the series with a commanding 11-0 shutout victory over Chaminade on Sunday at Hans L'Orange Field. The Sunbirds' offense was bolstered by 11 walks and a home run, while their starting pitcher allowed just five hits in a complete game shutout.

Fresno Pacific opened the game strong with Chris Clement doubling down the left field line. Gabe Henderson followed with a single to left center, driving in Clement for the first run. Aaron Martinez Jr. walked, and Titus Wheelock, the reigning PacWest and West Region Player of the Week, was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Alex Lopez reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Henderson to score, putting the Sunbirds up 2-0 after the first inning.

In the third inning, Henderson walked and stole second. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Lopez singled up the middle, bringing Henderson home. The Sunbirds extended their lead to 3-0 through three innings.

The Blue and Orange added two more runs in the fifth inning. After singles by Wheelock and Holden Hirschkorn, Lopez and Wheelock scored on a play that ended with Hirschkorn being thrown out at second. This brought the score to 5-0. In the sixth, Wheelock hit a three-run homer to left field, scoring Henderson and Martinez. This powerful hit - his third three-run blast in the Sunbirds' last six games - extended their lead to 8-0.

The seventh inning saw Fresno Pacific capitalize further. Brennan Johnson walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Clement. Henderson singled to bring in another run, and Martinez singled to score Smith, advancing the score to 11-0. The Sunbirds secured the 11-0 victory over Chaminade after the Silverswords went down in order to close out the final inning of the game.

Matt Bettencourt delivered a standout performance on the mound for the Sunbirds, pitching a complete game shutout over seven innings. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Bettencourt faced 28 batters, throwing 81 pitches, with 47 of them being strikes. His efforts contributed to a 1.00 WHIP and improved his record to 2-0 for the season.

The Sunbirds are 19-15 overall and 14-8 in the PacWest. The team is ranked third in conference, trailing behind nationally-ranked Point Loma and Westmont. The 'Birds are riding an eight-game winning streak. Currently, shortstop Henderson ranks first in the PacWest in stolen bases, third baseman Martinez sits third in doubles and walks, and first baseman Wheelock is fifth in runs batted in.

NEXT UP: The Birds will stay in Oahu and begin a two-day, four-game series against Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday, April 1, with first pitch scheduled for 5pm PT.
