Lady 'Birds Wrap Up SoCal Trip With Golden Eagles Matchup

IRVINE, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's water polo fell to Concordia University Irvine with a final score of 14-4 on Saturday at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. The Sunbirds managed two power-play goals during the match, but Concordia's dominant first period set the tone for the game.

Despite the 'Birds efforts, the Golden Eagles established an early lead in the first quarter, 2-0. FPU responded with a power play goals from senior Maggie Cook and sophomore Frances Benson, but Concordia's offense dominated the remainder of the quarter, jumping ahead 8-2. In the second quarter, Fresno Pacific's Sierra Coyne managed to find the net shortly after a Golden Eagle goal. The Golden Eagles maintained their momentum in the third quarter, adding three more goals to their belt. The Sunbirds didn't count themselves out just yet as M. Cook sent the ball deep into the cage for the final Sunbird goal. The Blue and Orange kept the Golden Eagles to a single goal in the fourth quarter, but CUI maintained their lead, securing a decisive 14-4 victory.

Heading into their last week of regular season play, the Sunbirds are 6-18 overall and 1-6 in WWPA play.

Currently, Emma Cook leads the team in goals, while her sister M. Cook is first in assists, points and steals. Dakota Lambert, the previous WWPA Defensive Player of the Week, has also been an offensive powerhouse for the team, ranking second in goals with 10 multi-scoring games under her belt. Not to mention Coyne has facilitated the team's offense with her incredible assists and Regan Azevedo has won several sprint opportunities for the 'Birds. Evalena Filippi has been the sole goalkeeper for the 'Birds this season, tallying 158 saves and 26 steals overall. She hit a season-high 11 saves versus Cal Lutheran and continues to uphold the Sunbirds' defense to the best of her abilities.
