FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's tennis secured a quick 4-0 victory over Westmont College on Wednesday at the Haak Tennis Complex. The Sunbirds clinched the doubles point and swept the top three singles matches to end the match against the Warriors. The Lady 'Birds are 7-4 overall with two more matches scheduled for the week.
Early on Wednesday morning, the Sunbirds were ranked 31st in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The good news overflowed into their match against the Warriors! FPU secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. At No. 1 doubles, #31
Yume Ueoku and
Fabiana Gonzalez defeated Sabina Salva and Lauren Gee, 6-1. The final point was clinched on court two as
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean won 6-2 against Thea Donarski and Liska Knight. Westmont may have picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, where Emma Rashid and Justie Spitzer prevailed 6-2 over
Malia Mitchell and Margarita Munoz, but the Sunbirds headed into singles 1-0.
In singles, freshman Gonzalez gave the Sunbirds an early lead with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Spitzer at No. 2 singles. Ueoku extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Donarski. Faherty clinched the match for FPU, triumphing 6-0, 6-1 over Salva at No. 3 singles. The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, with the Sunbirds leading in each. Munoz was ahead 6-2, 3-3 against Gee at No. 4 singles, while McLean and Mitchell held leads in their respective matches, keeping FPU in control throughout the contest.
