LONG BEACH, Calif. - The PacWest Conference selected their weekly baseball honorees on Monday afternoon. Coming off an explosive 4-0 sweep of Hawaii Hilo, the Fresno Pacific baseball team captured two of the three PacWest weekly honors, securing Team of the Week for the second time this season and claiming Player of the Week thanks to
Titus Wheelock's exceptional performance against the Vulcans.
In true Sunbird fashion, Fresno Pacific Baseball rallied after their intense weekend against conference leader Point Loma and Division I opponent, University of Nevada. The Sunbirds returned home to Dan Martin Stadium and didn't disappoint in the conference series sweep over Hawaii Hilo. The Vulcans were outscored by the 'Birds in game one, 13-2, and the momentum continued throughout the entire weekend. On day one, FPU's freshman pitchers,
Zach Simmon and
Drew Petty, delivered standout performances on the mound. Simmon's six-inning outing ended with 11 strikeouts, marking the second highest total in the PacWest this season. Petty pitched his second complete game of the season, allowing only two runs. The Blue and Orange wrapped up the day with a walk-off walk and two back-to-back home runs in the 4-3 comeback win. Second baseman
Tejean Smith and first baseman Wheelock were responsible for the valiant comeback in the fifth inning, as they slammed the two homers over the Vulcan's heads.
The second double header was truly Wheelock's time to shine! The native from Riverbank, Calif. stepped up to the plate and hit a ball 112mph off the bat over the centerfield fence to give the Sunbirds a 5-0 lead. When the same opportunity presented itself in the seventh inning, the first baseman didn't hesitate to sail another whopping hit to left field, tallying 6 RBI in one game. Overall, the Sunbird starter went 8-16 on the week, collecting 13 RBI and four home runs in five games. The Modesto CC transfer currently has six home runs under his belt with 27 RBI in total this season. He continues to be a crucial piece in the 'Birds gameplay, executing well both offensively and defensively.
Overall, Fresno Pacific is 15-15 overall and 10-8 in PacWest play. The team is currently ranked fifth in conference standings and is looking forward to their upcoming trip to Hawaii.
NEXT UP: The 'Birds are on the road! Fresno Pacific heads to the Hawaiian island of Oahu for eight games against Chaminade (March 27-29) and Hawaii Pacific (April 1-2) before two games in Atherton as part of a home-and-home series against Menlo. The 'Birds are back at Dan Martin Stadium on Saturday, April 11 for a pair against the Oaks.
