'Birds Score Five in Midweek D1 Showdown

RENO, Nev. — Fresno Pacific Baseball fell to Division 1 opponent, University of Nevada, with a final score of 15–5 on Tuesday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. In the end, the 'Birds managed to score five runs on 13 hits, including a solo home run by first baseman Titus Wheelock.

Fresno Pacific was quick to get on base in the first inning, but Nevada stopped their progression with a ground out double play. At the bottom of the first, Craig Yanagihara started on the mound for the 'Birds. A great stop by Tejean Smith scored the second out of the inning, narrowly missing the double play at first. However, the Wolf Pack brought in three runners on a home run, increasing the score to 0-3. Several pitching changes occurred for FPU, bringing in Dustin Tinsley and Tyler Gonzales, as Nevada jumped ahead with another big home run. By the end of the second inning, the Wolf Pack led the game 10-0.

In the third, Matt Bettencourt was the fourth pitcher for the Sunbirds and changed the momentum. The Blue and Orange managed to keep the home team scoreless as they pushed through the inning. First baseman Wheelock was the saving grace for FPU as he sailed a beautiful home run over the fence, bringing it to 10-1. It marked the third home run of the season for the Sunbird starter.

In the fourth, Zach Simmon stepped up to the mound, sweeping through the inning with the help of a Sunbird double play that soared from shortstop Gabe Henderson to Smith to Wheelock.

Henderson was the next FPU player to bring someone home, sending the ball down the right line so Eric Wilson could cross the plate, 2-10. Keeping the good energy going, center fielder Darryl Dilworth Jr. scored on Chris Clement's single to right field. Approaching the plate after his early home run, Wheelock singled up the middle for the two RBI, advancing Henderson and Clement home, 5-10. However, another double play by the Wolfpack closed out the inning.

The 'Birds kept Nevada scoreless for four straight innings, but it wasn't until the seventh that they added another to the board, 5-11. A member of the Wolf Pack tallied his third home run of the day, which was followed by a two run shot to deep left field, and an RBI double that closed the game, 15-5.

Wheelock led the Sunbirds with a powerful performance, collecting three hits, including a solo home run, and driving in three runs. Shortstop Henderson contributed significantly by recording two hits and an RBI, highlighted by a double. Catcher Alex Lopez was effective at the plate, securing two hits and a double.

Several Sunbird pitchers stepped up to the plate, including Dylan Senneway, Damon McKenzie, Andrew Stalnaker, Jacob Ruiz, and Carlo Ramirez.

Fresno Pacific Baseball is 11-15 overall and 6-8 in PacWest play.
