Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Sunbirds Enter Dangerous Waters in Saturday Showdown

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team returned to Sanger West on Saturday afternoon for matches against Concordia and Division I opponent, San Diego State. Despite the Sunbirds' efforts to rally on day two, the team ultimately fell 3-19 in the first game and 4-16 against the Aztecs.

GAME 1 | FPU 3, CUI 19

Concordia dominated the first quarter, establishing a 4-0 lead. The Golden Eagles continued their momentum with four more until senior Maggie Cook snapped their streak. Just before the half, her last second goal, assisted by her sister Emma Cook, put the 'Birds on the board, bringing it to 1-8. The Blue and Orange continued to trail the Golden Eagles for the remainder of the game as they jumped ahead with seven goals. Strong contributions from Frances Benson and Sofia DeRollo scored the final goals for FPU in the third. Regan Azevedo was active defensively, collecting two steals and drawing an exclusion, along with winning a sprint. However, Concordia didn't let up steam in the fourth, shutting out the Sunbirds and scoring an additional four points to win it, 19-3.

GAME 2 | FPU 4, SDSU 16

San Diego State did not make it any easier for the 'Birds in game two. Despite trailing by six at the start, Sofia DeRollo was the first to score for Fresno Pacific, netting a penalty goal at the two-minute mark. Her ball effectively skipped past the Aztecs' keeper, giving the 'Birds a needed shift in momentum. In the second period, M. Cook didn't hesitate to score the next big point, taking a perfect pass from Dakota Lambert on the powerplay opportunity. The Aztecs struggled with turnovers as the game continued but ultimately held tight to the lead. In the fourth, DeRollo netted the final goal of the match, to end the game FPU 4 – SDSU 16.

In the cage, Evalena Filippi tallied eight saves overall, fending off the Aztecs attacks. The Sunbird goalkeeper is ranked third in conference in saves (147) and tied for fifth in saves-per-game (7.0).

The women's water polo team is 6-15 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
