Sunbirds Win Conference Opening Series Against Eagles

FRESNO, Calif. — After narrowly falling to Biola 4-3 on Saturday afternoon, Fresno Pacific baseball captured their first conference series win of the season by outscoring the Eagles with three additional runs in the second game of the day.

GAME 1 | FPU 3 - BU 4
Kicking off day two, Biola took an early lead, scoring one run in the third inning with an RBI single. They added another in the fourth after Adiel Torres reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead after four innings.

The 'Birds did well defensively as the game progressed. At one point, a driven Eagles' ball soared down the middle past pitcher Drew Petty on the mound, but Smith had an impressive diving catch and throw to Wheelock to get the third out at the top of the fifth.

FPU's offense awoke in the seventh inning. Tejean Smith walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Hirschkorn scored on a groundout by Aaron Martinez, leveling the game at 2-2. However, Biola responded in the bottom half of the inning, adding two runs, taking a 4-2 lead after seven innings.

The 'Birds closed out the eighth with a double play, capitalizing on a fly out to rightfield and caught the Eagle runner on their way back to first. In the ninth, the Sunbirds managed a rally. Gavin Henderson singled and was driven in by an RBI double from Martinez, bringing the score to 4-3. Despite the effort, the comeback fell short, and Biola secured the win.

On the mound, Drew Petty delivered a strong performance for FPU, pitching six innings while allowing six hits and just one earned run. Petty struck out two batters and walked one, maintaining composure on the mound with nine groundouts and six flyouts. Andrew Stalnaker faced difficulties in his brief appearance, yielding three hits and two earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Damon McKenzie closed the game effectively, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and one strikeout, demonstrating control by not issuing any walks.

GAME 2 | FPU 9 - BU 6
FPU opened the game with a strong offensive performance, scoring two runs in the first inning. Darryl Dilworth singled up the middle and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a flyout. Trent Wheelock doubled to center field, driving in Dilworth, followed by an RBI single from Austin Lopez, scoring Wheelock. The Sunbirds led 2-0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, FPU extended its lead. Dilworth doubled down the left field line to kick things off. An opportunity presented itself after Biola switched pitchers. With two outs on the board, Wheelock went to a full count before he was walked to bring in Dilworth for the third run for FPU, leaving the bases loaded as he jogged to first. The 'Birds showed true patience in the inning, swinging only when absolutely necessary.

FPU's bats remained hot in the third inning. Chris Clement and Eric Wilson both singled, setting up a scoring opportunity. After a series of wild pitches and walks, Clement and Ruben Rodriguez scored, with Hirschkorn also reaching home on another wild pitch. The 'Birds led 6-0 after three innings.

Biola finally responded in the fourth inning with a solo home run by BU's Torres, putting them on the board. However, Lopez scored on a passed ball, and Dilworth's single brought in two more unearned runs, extending the 'Birds lead to 9-1 after the fourth inning.

The Eagles mounted a comeback attempt in the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits and several walks. They added two more runs in the sixth inning, narrowing FPU's lead to 9-6. Fresno Pacific struggled after the fifth with pitching changes and multiple walks, keeping the game moving at a snail's pace. It wasn't until Josh Nixon came in to save the day. The Livermore native closed the game with a two-inning save, yielding just one hit and walk with no runs allowed over eight batters faced.

Overall, Dilworth posted an impressive performance with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs, including a double and a stolen base. Wheelock contributed two runs and two RBIs from his two doubles and added a walk. Henderson was effective defensively, recording four assists and initiating a double play. On the mound, Dylan Senneway secured the win with four innings pitched, allowing just one earned run while striking out one.
