'Birds Split Day 2 to Win the Opening Series 3-1

CARSON, Calif. — Fresno Pacific University (2-1) suffered a 3-0 loss to California State University, Dominguez Hills (1-2) on Saturday at Toro Field. CSUDH's pitching staff recorded a shutout, allowing nine hits but no runs to secure the victory.

GAME 1 | FPU 0, CSUDH 3

In the first inning, CSUDH took an early lead when their player scored on a single, making it 1-0. The following innings saw both the Sunbirds and CSUDH unable to add runs to the scoreboard, with the teams exchanging defensive plays to maintain the status quo. By the seventh inning, Dominguez Hills extended their lead with a solo home run, bringing the score to 2-0. In the eighth inning, the Toros capitalized on an error, scored on a wild pitch to bring the final score to 3-0. Fresno Pacific managed consistent hits throughout the game, totaling nine, but could not convert these opportunities into runs.

Jake Turley delivered a solid start for the Sunbirds, pitching five innings while allowing five hits and one earned run. Turley struck out three batters and walked two, managing to keep the opposition scoreless over his final four innings. Damon McKenzie followed with two innings of relief, conceding two hits and one earned run, which came on a solo home run. Dylan Senneway closed with one inning, surrendering 2 hits and an earned run, while walking one.

Alex Lopez finished with two hits and a hit-by-pitch, contributing consistently from the plate. Gabe Henderson added a hit and provided steady defense with two assists from the shortstop position. Aaron Martinez Jr. recorded a hit and demonstrated reliability in the field with five assists at third base. Eric Wilson collected two hits, showing effectiveness as the designated hitter.

GAME 2 | FPU 5, CSUDH 2

A four-run second inning propelled the Sunbirds to their third win of the season. Fresno Pacific opened the game with Martinez doubling to right center in the first inning. Martinez advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error, putting the Sunbirds on the board first. CSUDH responded with two runs in their half of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead.

In the second inning, the Sunbirds capitalized on defensive miscues, scoring four unearned runs. Braxton Riley's two-RBI single and Henderson's two-RBI single highlighted the inning, pushing the Sunbirds ahead 5-2. The Toros threatened in the bottom of the second but was held scoreless after a fielder's choice cut down a runner at home. Both teams were held scoreless through the third inning. Fresno Pacific's pitching and defense continued to stifle the Toros, allowing no runs through the fourth and fifth innings despite allowing a few baserunners. The defensive stand continued for the 'Birds, as they maintained their 5-2 advantage into the final innings with effective pitching and fielding. CSUDH was unable to generate further offense, resulting in a 5-2 victory for the Sunbirds.

Drew Petty delivered a solid performance on the mound, pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits, while not issuing any walks and striking out 2. Petty showed resilience after a challenging first inning, where he conceded both runs, by keeping Dominguez Hills scoreless over the next five innings. Cruz Cabral secured the save, pitching a perfect 7th inning with one strikeout, maintaining the clean slate and ensuring the victory for the Sunbirds.

Riley recorded two RBIs and scored a run, contributing significantly to the team's offensive effort. Henderson also drove in two runs with his single, while adding four assists from the shortstop position. Additionally, Cabral earned a save with a scoreless inning, striking out one and facing just three batters.
